Mazda has announced the launch of five new SUVs worldwide by 2023. It was confirmed that three models, including the “Mazda CX-70,” will be launched in the United States. Here’s what you can expect from the future Mazda SUV.
Design and interior of Mazda CX-70
The CX-70, like the upcoming Mazda CX-90, will be a model designed and developed primarily for North America. Mazda has announced that the CX-70 will be its wide-body two-row SUV belonging to the midsize segment. For customers who prefer a larger, more presentable SUV than the CX-60, the CX-70 has proportions that are “optimized for the US consumer, with larger interior and luggage space. “The exterior and interior of the CX-70 are very similar to the CX-60 (pictured).
Features and specifications of Mazda CX-70
The Mazda CX-70 should be feature-rich in all trims and differentiated by a range of wheels and finishes. On the exterior, adaptive LED headlights, 20-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof and a no-touch power tailgate could be key features.
Inside, highlights include a large color HUD, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, infotainment system with 12.3-inch touchscreen, Mazda Connect and Mazda Connect Commander control knobs, maple trim and nappa leather upholstery. It is highly likely that it will be part of the functions that should be performed.
When it comes to safety, expect Mazda to include a 360-degree camera, Front Cross Traffic Alert ‘FCTA’ and Lane Departure Warning ‘LAS’. The CX-70 is equipped with Lane Keep Assist “LDWS”, Blind Spot Assist (BSM) with Rear Traffic Alert “RCTA”, Blind Spot Assist and Exit Warning function, Driver Monitoring (DM), etc.
The CX-70 is based on the company’s Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture, which debuted in the CX-60. It features a longitudinal mechanical layout (front engine, rear wheel drive) that is claimed to offer “Mazda’s next level” design, performance, handling and technology. It will be available in petrol and plug-in hybrid variants.
The plug-in hybrid CX-70 will likely use a modified version of the CX-5’s 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G 4-cylinder direct-injection petrol engine, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and i-Active. The electric motor/generator supporting the engine may be integrated into the gearbox. The CX-70’s plug-in hybrid powertrain can produce about 325 hp and about 370 lb.-ft. of torque.
The traction battery pack, which powers the electric motor, is likely a 17.8kWh lithium-ion unit, positioned between the axles and as low as possible for a low center of gravity. We can provide EPA est. 25-30 miles range. How the plug-in hybrid system works could be similar to the CX-60 PHEV.
Release date of Mazda CX-70
In the outlook (pdf) provided by Mazda on May 13, 2022, it said it had no plans to introduce the CX-70 in fiscal year 2023 (Japanese fiscal year ending March 31, 2023). The company plans to launch its CX-70 in the US between April 2023 and December 2023. On its US website, Mazda says in a page titled “Upcoming Mazda Crossover SUVs,” the CX-50, CX-70 and its CX-90 will come to the US by 2023.
Price of Mazda CX-70
Though Mazda have not released any official pricing of its new vehicle but CX-70 plug-in hybrids can start in the $40,000-$45,000 range.
Conclusion of Mazda CX-70
Thanks to its front-engine, rear-wheel-drive architecture, the Mazda CX-70 has built a reputation not only for the comfort, refinement and safety of a premium midsize SUV, but also for its agility and driving pleasure. Additionally, the availability of plug-in hybrid systems is certainly attractive to consumers interested in reducing operating costs and environmental impact.
