MG Mulan (MG4) – a new electric hatchback from MG Motor is a burning cake in automotive EV industry as company is planning to launch it very soon.
SAIC-owned company MG Motor has developed a new electric vehicle, MG Mulan, which is more advanced and of higher quality than MG ZSEV, despite its low-price positioning. The company plans to launch a new electric hatchback as MG4 Electric in Europe in the fourth quarter of 2022 (October to December 2022).
MG4 Electric is one of the four new MGEVs in the “Cyber” series. Other models are the, Cyber S SUV (codename: MG IP42), Cyberster sports car, Cyber S SUV (codename: MG IP42), and MG Cyber X SUV (codename: MG AS34). This is what we know about MG compact electric vehicles.
Design of MG Mulan (MG4)
The MG4 Electric is an aggressive style electric hatchback. According to SAIC, this is the MG brand’s first truly global car, designed to appeal to both Chinese and global customers. The front of MG4 features a shark-like nosepiece, petal-shaped triple headlights, a muscle bumper with vertical side air intakes, a lip spoiler, and a split lower air intake.
The MG4 Electric has a sporty design on the sides with raised ribs, creases on the doors and shoulders, orange brake calipers and two-tone alloy wheels in black and silver in the typical aerodynamic design of electric vehicles. There will probably be more alloy wheel options. The charging port is located on the rear quarter panel above the left wheel arch.
The rear of MG4 Electric features a crouched position, a large taillight of almost full width (with SAIC Vision LED lighting system), a clean bumper, a split rear spoiler, and a large SUV-style skid plate. It looks like a crossover in many ways, except for its low ride height.
Color and Accessories of MG Mulan (MG4)
MG Mulan will be available in China with multiple options such as wheels, roof, rear spoiler and headlights. According to local reports, MG offers Mulan from Rong Green, Bright White, Lightspeed Silver, Flame Red, Andean Gray and Brighton Blue. The MG4 Electric color palette may not change much around the world.
Interior of MG Mulan (MG4)
The MG4 features a sleek, contemporary interior with a simplistic dashboard with slim air-conditioned outlets, a floating center console, flat top and bottom compact two-spoke steering, and two-tone bright white and gray. It features upholstery. The instrument cluster is a compact display mounted on the dashboard. The touchscreen infotainment display is also in the center of the dashboard.
The interior of the MG4 has a minimalist feel and looks as attractive as ID.3 and Megane E-Tech.
Specifications of MG Mulan (MG4)
With the great simplistic and futuristic design, MG Mulan (MG4) is packed with amazing specifications. Here we are going to deeply look after platforms being used by MG Mulan(MG4) and other specifications like Dimension and so on.
Platform used for MG Mulan (MG4)
While the ZS EV is a descendant of the ICE (ZS) model, the MG4 Electric is a bespoke electric vehicle based on the nebula platform. That’s what MG calls a new platform at home. In Europe, the brand used is Modular Scalable Platform (MSP for short). In a report published June 26, 2022, autohome.com.cn calls it a “super platform” designed from scratch specifically for electric vehicles. “E2” is an internal codename according to a Chinese report, meaning it is the successor to MG Marvel’s E1 platform.
MSP’s scalable design enables the development of electric vehicles with a wheelbase of 2,650 to 3,100 mm. With the new platform, you can design electric vehicles with different body styles such as hatchbacks, sedans, sedans, SUVs and vans. It will play an important role in MG’s growth in Europe.
According to Kang Huaping, Vice President of SAIC Innovation Research and Development Institute, work on the Nebula Platform (MSP) began as soon as the development of Marvel X was completed. SAIC has invested heavily in this platform for standardization, modularization, integration, and intelligence. In the future, the Roewe, Feifan (formerly R) and Zhiji brands will also receive models based on the new dedicated EV platform.
Dimension of MG Mulan (MG4)
The MG electric model has a length of 4,287 mm, a width of 1,836 mm, and a height of 1,504 mm. According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MG Mulan) of China, the wheelbase of a compact electric vehicle has a margin of 2,705 mm. Judging by its size, it competes with Nissan Leaf, VW ID.3, Cupra Born and Renault Megane E-Tech.
DP-EPS in MG Mulan (MG4)
The MG4 Electric has a weight distribution of 50:50, which improves handling. Also, at least in China, dual pinion electric power steering (DP-EPS) is being used instead of the traditional rack and pinion electric power steering (REPS). As customers around the world increasingly prefer SUV body styles and electric powertrains, new technologies are coming to the automotive industry just in time. Due to the weight of the heavy battery, the steering load is higher on electric vehicles than on internal combustion engines. A separate steering system is required to handle the extra weight. With DP-EPS, the primary sprocket is optimized for vehicle dynamics and performance, and the secondary sprocket is optimized for assist.
Range and Performance of MG Mulan (MG4)
MG4 is available in two RWD configurations. One is a 125 kW (168 hp) motor and a 51-kWh battery pack, and the other is a 150 kW (201 hp) motor and a 64-kWh battery pack. The 51kWh battery pack offers a range of 350km (217 miles) and the 64kWh battery pack offers a range of 450km (280 miles). Both range specifications correspond to the European WLTP cycle.
The MG4 Electric is capable to accelerate from 0-100 km / h (0-62 mph) in less than 8 seconds and has a top speed of 160 km / h (99 mph). There is an AWD variant in the pipeline with an additional motor to drive the front wheels. This could be a performance-oriented variant with a sprint time of less than 4 seconds from 0-100 km / h (0-62 mph) to challenge the VW ID.3 GTX.
One pack battery in MG Mulan (MG4)
MG says it was able to keep the height of the car very low thanks to a very flat battery that is part of a “one pack” battery system called the Rubik’s Cube Battery System in China. It is the slimmest battery developed by the parent company SAIC.
The horizontal cell placement of the one-pack battery system enables an industry-leading minimum battery height of 110 mm. The length and width of the battery are 1,690 mm and 1,300 mm, respectively. SAIC uses new Cell-to-Pack or CTP technology to make MG4 Electric one of the brand’s most advanced electric vehicles.
With the one-pack battery system, you can build a battery pack with an energy storage capacity of 40kWh to 150kWh. Battery replacement is also possible. In other words, SAIC will be able to sell MSP-based EVs as BaaS (Battery as a Service)
Charging of MG Mulan (MG4)
The MSP platform also enables 800 volt charging technology. Equipped with 800 volt charging technology, the model achieves a range of 200 km (124 miles) in just 5 minutes and takes only 15 minutes to charge to 80%. Models with regular 400 volt charging technology achieve a range of 100 km (62 miles) with a 5-minute charge and take 30 minutes to charge to 80%. The autohome report suggests that bidirectional charging is also possible for models based on the Nebula Platform (MSP).
Pricing of MG Mulan (MG4)
Located between MG3 and MG5, the base price of MG4 Electric in Europe is expected to be well below € 30,000. The new electric hatchback has the potential to become the best-selling MG model in European countries. According to Guy Pigoonakis, commercial director of MG Motor UK, MG4 Electric will beat ZSEV on a “pound / mile” basis, according to an Autocar report. It is less expensive to run than the ZSEV, which consumes 17.3 kWh / 100 km (WLTP) in the standard range variation and 17.8 kWh / 100 km (WLTP) in the long-range variation. MG has confirmed that the base price does not exceed 200,000 yuan (US $ 29,870).
Production of MG Mulan (MG4)
Production will take place at SAIC’s Ningde plant in China, according to images distributed in the local media (viewed at d1ev.com). This factory is the largest automobile factory in Asia. In the domestic market, it may be launched in the third quarter of 2022.
