Model Y challenger: Polestar 4 is expected to hit market in 2023
Swedish high-performance electric vehicle maker Polestar has strong plans to become a major player in the luxury EV space.
Polestar still has work to do in this early stage of establishing itself as a global brand. It is not intended to add new nomenclature to the list. The company uses a number based on its position in the lineup for the model name to be released following the 3 series. Shortly after the 4 series, Polestar will be racing with its 5 and 6 models.
The company has three of its electric vehicles in the pipeline, and future Polestar models include a Tesla Model Y rival. Hereโs everything we know about the Polestar 4. D-segment premium sports SUV.
Design of Polestar 4

In addition to its smaller size, the 4 differs from the 3 in its custom design. Ingenlath told British magazine CAR that each new Polestar model will have a different shape and shade. The teaser below clearly shows that the taillights will have L-shaped outer edges like the 5 instead of C-shaped outer edges like the 4.
While the Polestar 3 is an SUV, the Polestar 4 is an SUV coupe, with firmer shoulders and a lower roof that slopes steeply to the rear. A more aerodynamic body should reduce energy consumption and slightly improve range.
The Polestar 4 has full-width taillights similar to the Polestar 5, but with a much shorter vertical section on the outer edge.
Specification of Polestar 4
According to Polestar investor documents released in May 2022, Polestar 4 will be on the PMA platform. However, Geely Automobile Group has now moved to its SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture platform), an advancement with much better specifications than the PMA.
The Polestar 4 can be fitted with single- and dual-engine powertrain options. No specs have been said yet, but given its position in Polestarโs lineup, its power and torque are unlikely to top the 3 Seriesโ 517 hp and 671 lb.-ft respectively.
Smaller and therefore lighter and more aerodynamic than the 3 Series, it should be 0-60 mph in less than 5 seconds. The battery pack capacity ranges from 80 to 100 kWh and aims to achieve EPA-est. Range over 300 miles.
Production of polestar 4
The company has completed its Hangzhou Bay plant, which is owned by Geely and operated as a manufacturing facility. Polestar estimates that the facility can deliver 240,000 vehicles per year based on its hourly jobs using Geelyโs practice.
Price and Release date of Polestar 4
Polestar plans to launch the 4 in late 2023. On Polestarโs third quarter 2022 earnings call on November 11, 2022, Ingenlath said the 4 is on track and is expected to launch in 2023. He revealed that the company will not only showcase its design, but will launch the 4 in 2023.
The company expects to sell 6,000 of its SUV coupe in 2023, 43,000 in 2024 and 79,000 in 2025. The Polestar 5 joins the lineup in 2024, followed by the Polestar 6 in 2026.
The Polestar 4 will cost around โฌ55,000 ($56,561), Ingenlath told CAR Magazine. However, he said that price will be reached โeventuallyโ. In fact, the introductory price is top-down, so it could be as high as โฌ70,000 (US$71,987).
The Polestar 4โs main rival, the Tesla Model Y, is priced at โฌ56,990 ($58,643) in Germany. However, the price of the Swedish model could drop around 2024 due to the launch of a simpler variant.
On November 3, 2022, Polestar announced a new cash injection aimed at securing and possibly speeding up operations to launch the 4 and other mass-produced models. The company raised its $800 million in an 18-month loan from Volvo Cars and an equal amount through direct and indirect funding and liquidity support from PSD Investments.
Position of Polestar 4 in EV market
Polestar 4 could be a major volume driver for the brand as it competes in popular segments in the brandโs core markets such as the US, China and the UK. Polestar says the 4 will be a โpremium sports SUVโ similar to the Porsche Macan. But in the EV world, the main competitors are the Tesla Model Y and the Audi Q6 e-Tron Sportback. 2025 will see the addition of the Lotus Type 134, which may technically be related to its 4 Series.
