Toyota Crown 2023 will be a new addition to Toyota’s U.S. lineup.
After a decade of absence from North America, the Toyota Crown nameplate is back in the US. Even though it’s the successor to the discontinued Avalon, this isn’t a traditional sedan. Instead, the 2023 Crown may be meant to straddle the line between passenger cars and its SUVs, broadening its appeal to buyers outside the shrinking large sedan segment.
Either way, the combination of a crowned driving position and three-box styling has carved out a niche occupied by classic luxury sedans like the Subaru Legacy SUS and Volvo S60 Cross Country. Both plug-in hybrid and EV variants are rumored, but the 2023 Crown will launch with a pair of conventional hybrid powertrains.
The entry-level layout is familiar, consisting of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with three electric motors and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The most expensive Platinum model has a dedicated hybrid Max powertrain that combines its turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a 340-horsepower rear-axle electric motor. The Crown’s distinctive looks and quirky body style are complemented by a spacious cabin packed with premium features. Toyota equips all Crown models with a wealth of standard driver assistance systems and infotainment technology.

All Crown models have hybrid powertrains, but only the top-of-the-line Platinum model gets Toyota’s new Hybrid Max setup. This combines its turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor on the rear axle for a total of 340 horsepower. The XLE and Limited models will have a 236-horsepower hybrid system that uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and its three electric motors. The XLE and Limited have a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), while the Platinum uses a 6-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is standard on all trim levels.
According to Toyota, the suspension is tuned for a relaxed ride, so don’t expect heroic cornering from the crown, but the Platinum model is fitted with adaptive dampers. When we get a chance to test the Crown, we’ll update this story with ride quality and test results.

Inside, the Crown’s cabin looks suitably upscale, and drivers who trade in Avalon sedans will receive an upgrade, especially if they purchase a Limited or Platinum model. With the driving position elevated from a traditional sedan height to a compact SUV-like height, the Crown could be an attractive alternative to full-size sedans that still follow the traditional formula. . All models come standard with 8-way power front seats with heating, dual-zone climate control and ambient interior lighting. Limited and Platinum trims add a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery and ventilated front seats.
Fuel economy of 2023 Toyota Crown
The EPA hasn’t gotten involved yet, but Toyota estimates the Crown can go back up to 38mpg with the base hybrid powertrain. The Platinum model’s more powerful Hybrid Max powertrain is said to deliver around 28mpg. A 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard, running Toyota’s latest and greatly improved software interface. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are built into the infotainment software and connect wirelessly to your smartphone. A second 12.3-inch display has a digital gauge in front of the driver, and the crown also includes features like a wireless smartphone charging pad, built-in its WiFi and USB-C ports. His XLE trim of the bass comes with a 6-speaker stereo, while the Limited and Platinum models come with its 11-speaker JBL stereo instead.

Toyota equips most of its cars with a variety of standard driver-assist features, and the Crown is no exception. All models come packaged with features such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and automatic high beams. I know The most interesting option is the more powerful Hybrid Max powertrain, exclusive to its top-of-the-line Platinum trim.
